If you
cannot think of a better name for a wedding photographer than
Younglove, you also probably cannot find a better photographer
than Grant Younglove of Costa Mesa. But weddings are not Grant's
only line of business. He's equally adept at portrait photography,
and his talent is evident in every photograph. Grant's interest
in photography was kindled at an early age by his father whose
avocation was photography.
The family lived in Riverside, and
Grant recalls that his father had a fairly sophisticated set up
for a hobbyist. "I remember watching him in the darkroom
making enlargements for our Christmas cards each year. And if
a friend were getting married, he would shoot it as a favor. In
fact, in the late 50's and early 60's, my father pioneered the
use of color film in shooting weddings. The demand got so great
he had to pass on his secrets to the town photographer who later
built a very successful business."
While
Grant was always fascinated by photography, he never thought about
making it a career until he met another photographer at UC Riverside
where Grant was majoring in biology. "He showed me all the
business aspects of photography and I decided to pursue it."
During the following years, Grant received numerous awards, but
most noteworthy was 1st place from the National Photographic Instructors
of America.
Grant officially started his
business in 1985 and is very much in demand throughout Orange
County. He says that about 75% of his clients come from referrals,
and don't ask him to choose a favorite between weddings and portraiture.
"I enjoy them equally, and while each is a different discipline
with unique requirements and techniques, I couldn't imagine giving
one up for the other." It is clear that Grant is one of the
lucky ones who is in love with his chosen profession, and he's
glad he made the decision to change careers while in college.
After all, a name like Younglove would have been wasted on a biologist.
